Surprises are the Best

It was just an ordinary night last night. We were have a Ham dinner with my Daughter, Granddaughter, My daughters boyfriend and my Mother. I had been feeling a little sad that I wasn’t going to see my Grandson on his birthday this Friday since we’d be going in 2 weeks for his party. Then they walked in the door – SURPRISE!! This kind of surprise is the best!!!
We were all in shock, we didn’t have any clue. Our good friends had picked them up at the airport. Our daughter had planned this in February and I have no idea how she kept it to herself.
I was so happy that we’d be with him on his actual birthday. Of course the 2 little cousins were over the moon excited to see each other and craziness ensued. A good craziness, a happy craziness, actually the best kind of craziness when family is happy together.
Every single toy, game and puzzle came out but the biggest hit was a single balloon. Yes 1 balloon made everyone laugh and screech with joy as we bounced it between people just out of the reach of the two little ones. It was the happiest I have seen my Mom in a long time, since my Father passed away in June. It’s the smallest thing in life that can have the biggest impact.
Life isn’t about grandiose events. It’s about the small things, everyday things, moments that make memories that will stay with you forever.

It’s time for all of us to take those small pieces of time and make the most of them. Think back on the things you remember vividly from your past. Happiness and joy help you to forget those little everyday problems and start being thankful for all the good things around you.
When my kids were growing up we didn’t have a lot of money but I always made sure that there was art supplies in the house. We were always creating something, certainly memories. They painted, they drew, they kept journals, the used clay, they planted, they had scavenger hunts, rode bikes and so many other things. It wasn’t the amount of money we spent, it was the amount of time that they still remember even now as grown-ups with families of their own. All three remember the lifesize self portraits that they painted. They helped each other to trace themselves on huge pieces of cardboard and then painted inside the lines. It was a fun project. I’ve started this tradition with my grandkids too. They always want to “do a project” and I am more than happy to oblige. I enjoy it as much as they do and now I think I have a little more patience. It’s ok when we make cookies and the entire jar of sprinkles end up on 2 cookies, it’s only sprinkles and they love it.
So the moral of this post is to do what makes you happy. Laugh more, love more and be grateful for the little everyday things in your life.
